Apple said the selected TSA security checkpoints at participating U.S. airports will be the first places where customers can present their mobile driver’s license or status ID to the Wallet app. Participating states and the TSA will share more information at a later date on when and where mobile driver licenses and IDs will be supported.

Apple is already in talks with many more U.S. states as part of its plan to offer the feature nationwide in the future, according to Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Apple Pay and Apple’s Apple Wallet, but it was not provided. no terms.

The ability to add a driver’s license or ID to the Wallet app is a feature of iOS 15, which will be released publicly later this year. Once a participating state begins offering this capability, customers will be able to tap the plus sign at the top of the Wallet app to begin adding their license or ID, and then simply tap their iPhone or Apple Watch on an ID reader at a TSA checkpoint, without removing your physical card.

Apple said the feature is designed with privacy and security in mind. When a driver’s license or state ID card is added to the Wallet app, customers will be required to take a photo of their face, which will be securely provided to the issuing state for verification. . As an additional measure, Apple said users will be asked to perform a series of facial and head movements during the setup process.

By touching the iPhone or Apple Watch on an ID reader, customers will see a request on their device that displays the specific information that the TSA requests. According to Apple, the requested credentials are released from your device only after you authorize it with Face ID or Touch ID. Users do not need to unlock, display or deliver their device to a TSA security agent to present their ID, the company added.

Apple said its mobile identification implementation supports the ISO 18013-5 standard, which sets clear privacy guidelines for filing an identification through a mobile device.

This feature will be expanded with existing support for the Wallet app for student IDs at selected US and Canadian universities and colleges.
