Apple celebrates Black History Month with limited edition watches, featured apps and books, and more

Apple announced today that it will be celebrating Black History Month with selected content that highlights and amplifies Black’s creators, artists, developers and businesses in the App Store, Apple Music, the Apple TV app, Apple Books, Apple Podcasts and far more. Content will be displayed throughout the month of February.

Apple also introduced a limited edition Apple Watch Series 6 with an inscription “Black Unity” and a sports band “Black Unity”, which will be available online and in the Apple and Target store from February 1 in the United States and 38 other countries. Apple says the watch will be available in February, with prices starting at $ 399, while the Sport Band will be priced at $ 49 and will remain available year-round.

The limited edition Apple Watch is complemented by the new “Unity” watch face of watchOS 7.3, which Apple confirmed will be released today. Both the Black Unity Sport watch band and the Unity watch face are based on the colors of the Pan-African flag.

  • App Store: A new black history month center will highlight black-owned businesses and black developers. Apple will also present stories with Black developers who will discuss the importance of rendering in apps and games.
  • Apple Music: Apple will include selected playlists, rehearsals, original videos and more from influential black musicians, authors and directors.
  • Apple Maps: Apple will feature Apple Maps guides created in collaboration with EatOkra, a Brooklyn-based black business directory application.
  • Apple TV application: According to Apple, this month’s theme for “Essential Stories” on the Apple TV app “will highlight the multidimensionality of the Black family and their representation on screen”. There will also be new content from Oprah Winfrey.
  • Apple News: Apple will feature selected thematic groups highlighting the “best journalism around the race in America,” while Apple News + will offer audio articles celebrating the Blacks ’experience.
