In a video released to employees days before Labor Day, Apple’s head of commerce and people, Deirdre O’Brien, addressed the growing number of Apple employees by expressing their views on labor issues such as wage inequality. .
For those who do not know, in recent weeks, some Apple employees have gone to Twitter to share their frustrations in the workplace, causing the “AppleToo” movement. Created by a group of employees, the “Apple Too” initiative is pushing for Apple to deliver on its promise of inclusion, diversity and equity, ”the website states.
In the video, he was seen by MacRumors, Deirdre O’Brien tells staff he has work issues to talk to his managers and the “business relations partner.” She says Apple has a “confidential process for thorough investigation, in a way that treats everyone with dignity and respect.”
Now I want you to hear this directly from me. First, if you ever have any concerns about your payment to Apple, talk to your manager or business partner. And secondly, if you ever want to report a concern about your work environment, please come talk to us. And know that we have a confidential process to investigate thoroughly so that you treat everyone with dignity and respect.
According to employees, O’Brien’s suggestion to consult a manager has not worked for some employees. “The system doesn’t work … it’s set up to work against you from the start,” one employee said MacRumors, requesting to remain anonymous.
This employee said his managers often tell workers that their salaries are “within the reach” of their field, which causes ambiguity about why their salary is not the same as another employee’s. The person also said that increasing complaints to Apple’s team of people can lead to retaliation from managers.
In the video, O’Brien does not mention “AppleToo” by name, but notes that he is aware of a “few” employees who “have asked questions about pay equity.” The executive says Apple is “deeply committed” to pay equity and uses industry-wide standards to achieve this.
We use an industry standard methodology and have a dedicated team of experts who lead a comprehensive process to control and maintain pay equity. And we partner with an independent third party who reviews our compensation each year. If this work identifies a gap, we close it. And our approach is considered the best in class.
O’Brien said that, based on U.S. data, Apple has already “achieved pay equity,” but says it’s still a “continuous effort.”
As of the publication of this article, the AppleToo movement is still collecting stories from Apple and employees sharing their experiences on Twitter. We have contacted Apple to comment and we will update if we receive news.
