This week, Apple has expanded the 13-inch MacBook Pro Display backlight service program worldwide, allowing coverage for eligible laptops up to five years after the original purchase date or up to three years after the start date of the program, whichever is longer. The above limit was four years after the original date of purchase.
Apple launched the program on May 21, 2019 after determining that a “very small percentage” of 13-inch MacBook Pro units sold between October 2016 and February 2018 may feature bright vertical areas at the bottom of the screen. or a backlight that stops working completely. Eligible models include the MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, two-port Thunderbolt 3) and the MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, four-port Thunderbolt 3).
To identify which Mac model you have, click the Apple logo at the top left of the screen, then select “About this Mac” from the menu. Apple has not extended the program to any other MacBook model at this time.
Apple or an authorized Apple service provider will replace the screen of the affected 13-inch MacBook Pro units for free. To begin the repair process, visit the Get Support page on the Apple website. If you think your MacBook Pro was affected by this issue and you paid to repair the screen, you can contact Apple for a possible refund.
In 2019, repair site iFixit reported that the backlight problems are caused by a delicate flexible cable that can wear and tear after repeatedly opening and closing the screen on affected 13-inch MacBook Pro models. Apple extended the length of the flexible cable by 2mm in the 2018 models, which apparently solved the problem.
