Apple says a “very small number of customers” with the 2016 and 2017 models of the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro have experienced a problem with the battery not charging more than 1%. Battery health status on affected laptops will indicate “Recommended Service.” To identify the Mac model, click the Apple logo at the top left of the screen and click About this Mac. This issue may affect the following models:

– MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, two-port Thunderbolt 3)
– MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, two-port Thunderbolt 3)
– MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, four-port Thunderbolt 3)
– MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, four-port Thunderbolt 3)
– MacBook Pro (15 inches, 2016)
– MacBook Pro (15 inches, 2017)

If your MacBook Pro has this behavior, Apple says contact the company to replace the battery for free. Apple says it will examine the laptop before service to see if it is fit for free replacement.

If your MacBook Pro has not experienced this issue, we recommend that you upgrade to macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 as soon as possible as a precaution. There is also an additional update of macOS Catalina 10.15.7 that prevents the issue.

MacOS Big Sur users can determine if the battery needs service by opening the System Preferences app, clicking Battery, selecting Battery in the sidebar, and clicking Battery Health. On macOS Catalina or earlier, users can hold down the Option key and click the battery icon in the menu bar to display the battery status menu.
