Apple Watch will now detect bike workouts, bike falls when driving: TechCrunch

Apple Watch users who ride a bike will receive a handful of new features designed just for them. Announced during today’s Apple iPhone press event, the company says the Apple Watch will begin detecting when users begin a bike ride to remind you that you need to start a workout. And, similarly to the rest of the workouts, Apple Watch will also pause and resume automatically as you pause during the trip. And, perhaps most importantly, you will also get a new fall detection feature.

While the Apple Watch can already detect a crash on 4-series or later devices, allowing users to contact emergency services if needed, Apple says it will now add crash detection to cycling. In this case, you are able to perceive the unique movement and impact that occur when someone falls while riding a bicycle, which is a different type of movement than someone who falls while standing.

For indoor cyclists like Peleton enthusiasts, the Apple Watch will also give more support to e-bikes with an improved training algorithm that more accurately calculates calories burned.

These features will join the others that Apple has added, such as the reinvented Breathe app, new clock faces and updates to messages and photos released with watchOS 8. Apple has also announced a new Watch product, with the Apple Watch Series 7, featuring a larger Retina display, interface redesign, new clock faces and colors, better charging and more.

In relation to workouts, Apple also announced an update to its subscription service, Fitness +, which will be available in 15 new countries in addition to the original six, adding Pilates workouts, guided meditations and workouts designed for skiers and snowboarders.
