Archaeologists have unearthed more than 100 skulls at the Aztec site in Mexico City

(CNN) – Archaeologists have unearthed a new section of the skulls of the famous Aztec Tower in Mexico City.

Now, archaeologists say they have unearthed an additional 119 human skulls on the east side of the tower. It is believed to be one of the seven skulls that stood in the Aztec capital, Tenoktitlan

A total of 484 skulls have been identified at the site, dating to at least 1486 and 1502.

The newly discovered wall covers the skulls of men, women and children. At least three children were found in the skulls, identified by their small formation and developing teeth.

The site also points out that the construction of the towers was part of the Aztec “cultural and identity practices”, according to the INAH publication.

“While we can’t say how many of these people are warriors, some may be prisoners of war,” archaeologist Raul Barrera told Reuters. “We know they are all sacred. They were turned into gifts for the gods or images of the gods.”

The publication says that after it came under the control of Spanish soldiers and allied allies in the 1500s, many of the structures built by the Aztecs in what is now the city of Tenochidlan in Mexico City were destroyed.

As a result, many skull towers were demolished in the area, and the scattered fragments have since been recovered by anthropological teams.

Although they were destroyed, they made a lasting impression on onlookers, as winners Hernான்n Cordes and Bernal dias del Castillo mentioned them in the letters of their conquests, the INAH said.
