St. Petersburg, Florida – Austin Meadows and Cuban Randy Arozarena hit home runs against Dominican Sunday’s Germán for the Tampa Bay Rays to extend their dominance over the New York Yankees, whom they beat 4-0 on Saturday.
The Rays have won 10 of 12 regular-season duels against the Yankees, their division rivals, since the start of the 2020 season.
Also, Tampa Bay eliminated New York last postseason, in a maximum of five Divisional Series games.
Six Tampa Bay pitchers combined to limit the Yankees to five hits.
Meadows started the count with a solo home run in the first inning, his third of the season.
Arozarena, a rookie who was key in the campaign that led the Rays to the World Series last year, hit a 420-foot solo home run in the third inning for a 4-0 lead.
Andrew Kittredge (2-0) worked 1 2/3 innings for the win. Rays opener Chris Archer came out of the game with a right forearm strain after 2 1/3 innings in which he conceded three hits and struck out four.
For the Yankees, the Venezuelan Gleyber Torres 4-0. Dominican Gary Sanchez 3-1. Colombian Gio Urshela 3-0.
For the Rays, the Cubans Arozarena 5-3 with one scored and one produced, Yandy Díaz 3-0. Dominicans Willy Adames 3-1 with one scored, Francisco Mejia 4-1 with two drives.
