Ciberpunk 2077 made the news for many reasons when it was released late last year, but a more urgent concern related to the game’s “braindance” sequence that caused convulsions.
After some discussion, it was quickly corrected and Microsoft confirmed that it would improve certification procedures to prevent it from being repeated on its consoles. However, reports suggest that Square Enix has recently been released Balance Wonderworld too contains a scene that can cause seizures.
The report comes from YouTuber Bigdaddyjende, who posted final images of the head of the PS5 edition of the game. There are two segments where bright, flashing white lights appear.
WARNING: We advise you not to watch the video if you are at risk for seizures.
If you really i want to take a look, this happens twice at 11:35 and 12:40. We did not embed the video on this page, for obvious reasons.
Game Informer’s Liana Ruppert, who covered Cyberpunk 2077-related issues, has posted the following PSA on the issue:
When I started watching the scene, that you tin video display at 12:40 p.m. (but I advise against it or with caution), I had to close it immediately. Instantly, my right side fell and I felt the onset of an episode. I walked away. I did my usual “review,” put on safer tech settings, and looked back, this time at a slower speed, to deny the quick-fire effect that I know is a trigger. What I saw (I hope) is simply a pre-release error, because if this scene was intended, my concern is that security checks be cut. I can’t imagine how this could go beyond the necessary security certification process if intended.
The previous scene not only uses intermittent effects, but shoots a series of white background flashes. Rapid succession is instantly dangerous, which is why I did a PSA on social media to warn me. Since this tweet was posted, I’ve had numerous people contact me, including developers and other QA developers, saying they’re not even epileptic, but that they felt “weird” after seeing it. My husband, who had no previous problems with epilepsy or neurological triggers, complained of dizziness before throwing up. Several others denounced the same.
It is not known for sure if this affects the Switch or Xbox versions of the game, but Square Enix has posted the following tweet about the problem and confirms that this is a known bug:
If you have already purchased the game on Switch, PlayStation or Xbox, we recommend that you download the patch before uploading it.
