And for motorists, a warning from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency: at midnight on New Year’s Eve, a city-sponsored fireworks show from a barge on the Pier, in the south of the Ferry Building, will likely cause increased traffic.

Muni
Walks through Muni it will be free New Year’s Eve from 8 pm on Tuesday, 31 December to 5 am on Wednesday 1 January.
This free Muni service was sponsored by Gas Station 76. All routes will be free on New Year’s Eve.
SFMTA doubled the number of owl services per night al 5-Fulton, 14-Mission, 22-Fillmore, 24-Divisadero, 25-Treasure Island, 38-Geary, 44-O’Shaughnessy, 48-Quintara-24th, 90-Owl, 91-Owl, L-Owl i N-Owl routes.
BART
Although the BART service will not be free, will run until 3 p.m. instead of its usual midnight limit so partygoers can return home to the bay area a little later.
Some changes to speed up the BART will start from 8pm on New Year’s Eve, which can cause problems for regular riders if you’re not prepared.
After 8 p.m., Antioch and Richmond trains to San Francisco will do not stop at Embardero station. Therefore, if you want to see the fireworks at The Embarcadero, it is advisable to go out to the BART station on Montgomery Street.
Alternatively, from 8pm trains on the Dublin / Pleasanton and Warm Springs line it will not stop at Montgomery station.
According to BART, trains from Millbrae, Daly City and SFO will stop at all San Francisco stations.
Once the fireworks are over: Antioch and Richmond trains it will not stop at the Embarcadero station. Trains on the Dublin / Pleasanton and Warm Springs line will not stop at Montgomery St..
Trains on the Dublin / Pleasanton and Warm Springs line it will not stop in West Oakland. The first stop on East Bay will be Merritt Lake Station. Passengers will have to travel to a train bound for San Francisco on Lake Merritt to return to West Oakland, according to BART.
Passengers bound for Millbrae, Daly City and SFO should use Montgomery St. Station.
Caltrain
Caltrain it will be free New Year’s Eve that begins at eight in the evening and ends at 2 in the morning, when the last train south leaves San Francisco.
The agency also operates two additional limited service trains heading north the evening before the fireworks show in San Francisco. On Wednesday, however, the agency will operate with reduced service hours on Sunday.
Caltrain does not allow alcohol on board trains after 9 p.m., the agency warned in a statement.
Golden Gate Transit and ferry to San Francisco Bay
San Francisco Bay Ferry will have no ferry service on any route on New Year’s Day, January 1st. It will run its normal weekday schedule on New Year’s Eve, Tuesday, December 31st.
Golden Gate Ferry is reduce some services and not offer any services on its commuter and ferry bus routes this week until January 1, New Year’s Day. For a full schedule of the special holiday service, click here. Golden Gate Bus and Ferry regular service resumes on 2 January.
