SAINT ANTHONY – Bexar District 3 District Commissioner Trish DeBerry and three San Antonio City Council members representing areas on the north side are asking the Bexar County Metropolitan Health District and Hospital District to co-manage a site of COVID-19 vaccination in the northern part of the county.
Over the next week, Texas is expected to receive 200,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, which recently received emergency authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
DeBerry says the shipment gives the city and county a chance to create a new vaccination site.
“The approval and submission of the Johnson & Johnson FDA creates a unique opportunity for the city and county to work together to expand vaccine distribution sites,” DeBerry said in a written statement.
District 8, 9 and 10 council members Manny Pelaez, John Courage and Clayton Perry joined Deberry to apply for a new vaccination site in northern Bexar County.
Announcements
Pelaez said the site will facilitate access to vaccines.
“Comfort is key to success,” Pelaez said. “By locating another place where the components live and work, we will be more likely to slow the spread of the virus.”
County officials said more than 200,000 people have been vaccinated through the city site at Alamodome and the county site at the Wonderland of the Americas mall.
Courage said current vaccination sites are not meeting their goals of vaccinating underserved populations.
“Current vaccination clinics are failing in their planned goal of vaccinating the most deprived populations. The data show that more northern residents are being vaccinated at these clinics. Why not make it more convenient for our voters? we are saying remove these clinics, just add more, ”Courage said in a written statement.

Local leaders propose the following locations as possible vaccination sites in northern Bexar County, as they are on easily accessible main roads:
-
Toyota Field at Wurzbach Parkway
-
VIA Park and Ride on Highway 281
-
Temple of Alzafar in the loop 1604
-
Texas Party at Interstate 10
“If the plan is to continue mass vaccination clinics in our community, we need a COVID vaccination site north of loop 410 now established. We have been told that the problem is not about the lack of available locations, but with a lack of supply. With more vaccines online, it is imperative that we provide closer access to vaccines for our vulnerable populations across the community, “Perry said in a written statement.
