WASHINGTON – Government officials are developing a plan for a multi-party infrastructure and economic package that could cost up to $ 3 trillion and meet key elements of President Biden’s campaign agenda, according to those involved in discussions.
The first proposal will focus on roads, bridges and other infrastructure projects and will include many of the climate change initiatives that Mr. Biden outlined the “Build Back Better” plan he launched during the 2020 campaign.
This package would be followed by measures focused on education and other priorities, including the extension of the recently expanded child tax credit scheduled to expire at the end of the year and the provision of a universal community college for early childhood education and without license plates, according to people.
The packages could face a difficult path through the narrowly divided Congress and Democrats do not all agree on how they should move forward with their spending and tax proposals. Mr Biden is expected to receive information on the details of the proposals this week and people warned that the strategy is preliminary. Mr Biden should sign the legislative strategy to move it forward.
Some details of the strategy under consideration were previously reported by the New York Times.
