In the midst of the commotion, a suicide bomber believed to be affiliated with ISIS detonated an explosive device near the airport that killed 13 members of the US service.
The United States later withdrew all its troops before the August 31 Biden deadline.
The president acknowledged that many Americans wanted to leave Afghanistan, but he did not like the way the withdrawal was executed.
“It’s hard to explain to anyone, how you could get out,” Biden said.
“For example, if we were in Tajikistan and took a C-130 and said we would let anyone who was involved in sympathizing with us get on the plane, you would have people hanging the wheel well. Come on,” he added.
