Biden, Georgia and the Beijing Olympics

When President Biden publicly pressured Major League Baseball last week to withdraw his All-Star Game from Georgia, he no doubt thought he was on the side of the Angels. But now what will he do about the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics?

Biden opposes Georgia’s new voting law as an “atrocity,” though it offers more avenues for voting than New York and Delaware, among other states. The president is so offended that he called on a sports league to boycott an American state, doing economic damage to the Atlanta area and essentially messing up the state legislature as fans.

We can’t wait to see what the U.S. president will say about China’s voting rules. There are no lines in the polling stations in the Middle Kingdom because there are no polling stations, no election controversies due to absence because there are no ballots. The country is led by a Chinese Communist Party leadership group, and its decisions are ratified by the National People’s Congress which meets once a year.

Perhaps Mr. Biden can compare the voting rules in Georgia with those in the re-education camps in Xinjiang Province. His own secretary of state says China is committing genocide against Uyghurs.

He could send Rob Manfred as an emissary to investigate, as the MLB commissioner is trying to expand his league’s business in China, even by boycotting an American state. Surely Chinese President Xi Jinping would allow Mr. Manfred to inspect the fields and why not invite LeBron James, a boycott enthusiast in Georgia, to certify that the Uighurs are happy in their work?
