Biden gets excited as he discusses his son Hunter’s book

President Biden told CBS’s Norah O’Donnell in a new interview that reading excerpts from his son Hunter’s upcoming memoirs “gave me hope.”

“The honesty with which he went ahead and talked about the issue … gave me hope to read it,” the president said, feeling emotionally audible as he spoke of his son’s struggles with the abuse of substances.

“It was like my boy’s back,” he added.

The president made the comments in an interview to be aired Sunday before the Super Bowl, his first television interview since taking office.

“My son, like a lot of people, like a lot of people you know at home, had a drug problem,” Joe Biden replied at the time. “He’s advanced it, he’s fixed it, he’s worked on it and I’m proud of him.”

The president noted a similar note in his interview with O’Donnell, presenting his son’s addiction struggles as relatable to many Americans.

“You know, I bet no family you know doesn’t have someone in the family who has drug or alcohol problems,” he said.

Hunter Biden’s memoirs, “Beautiful Things,” will be published in April and are expected to deal frankly with his drug use.

Hunter Biden confirmed late last year that the U.S. attorney’s office in Delaware was investigating his tax matters. Reports have suggested that the investigation focuses on their foreign trade relations, which were the target of former President Trump’s attacks during the campaign.

Hunter Biden is the only living son of the president. Her other son, Beau Biden, died in 2015 after a battle with brain cancer.
