Similarly, their counterparts from Russia and China, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, will also be present at this virtual climate summit, according to a State Department representative.

The President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula Von der Leyen, is also expected to attend the meeting; the German chancellor, Angela Merkel; French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The aim of the summit is to invite other countries to formulate their own commitments to reduce greenhouse gases, the White House said.
