Pentagon officials had warned after Thursday’s bombing that another attack, including one using a car bomb or some other device, was still a possibility. Kabul airport has been a target for terrorists, officials have warned, as thousands of Afghan civilians and U.S. citizens head there to evacuate the country before the military withdrawal at the end of the month.
“We still believe that there are credible threats. In fact, I would say specific and credible threats and we want to make sure we are prepared for those, ”Defense Department Press Secretary John Kirby said Friday.
Biden has pledged to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan on August 31, despite Thursday’s terrorist attack that prompted some lawmakers to call for an extension because all Americans and Afghans who helped in the war effort could be safely withdrawn from the country.
But the president has warned that the longer U.S. forces remain in the country, the more dangerous the situation will be.
The White House said Thursday that 12,500 people were evacuated from Afghanistan despite the bombing and that more than 100,000 people have been withdrawn from the country since late July.
Biden vowed on Thursday to hunt down the terrorists responsible for the attack outside the airport. Military officials on Friday briefed the president and vice president on plans to develop targets for that response, the White House said.
“The president reaffirmed with the commanders the approval of all the authorities they need to carry out the operation and protect our troops, and they all reported that they had the resources they deemed necessary to do so effectively,” he said. Psaki.
