Bill Belichick hides surprising praise for Adam Gase, Sam Darnold

Jets fans may be counting down seconds until Adam Gase is no longer the head coach, but Bill Belichick doesn’t think there’s anyone better for the job at Florham Park.

Prior to Sunday’s clash with the Jets, the Patriots’ longtime coach raised questions about the team he worked for just before coming to New England, as well as quarterback Sam Darnold. Belichick let him know how much he thought of Darnold, who has apparently relegated in his second and third NFL seasons, and who doesn’t think the QB can be in better hands.

“I don’t think you can have anyone better to order it than where it is,” he told reporters Wednesday.

Gase, who is 9 to 22 years old in two seasons with the Jets heading into Sunday’s game, admitted earlier this month that he believes Darnold’s struggles have been on him and the coaching staff. The end of Sunday’s regular season is believed to be Gase’s last game with the Jets.

For 11 games this season, Darnold has recorded just eight touchdown passes with nine interceptions. He missed four games this season due to a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder.

“I don’t think there’s any lack of talent or ability to play,” Belichick said of Darnold. “… He’s an athletic guy who’s a big size, a big arm, hard to face in his pocket, he has good prospects and he’s being well trained.”
