Ken Langone, the Home Depot billionaire co-founder and Republican megadonor, said he feels “betrayed” by President Trump after last week’s siege of the Capitol.
Langone shattered Trump’s attempts to nullify the 2020 election results and pledged to help President-elect Joe Biden “be the best president we’ve ever had.”
“I feel betrayed,” Langone told CNBC in an interview Wednesday. “… Last Wednesday was a misfortune, it should never have happened in this country and, if it does not break the hearts of all Americans, something is wrong. It breaks my heart for sure. I didn’t sign up. “
Langone is a prolific Republican candidate for donors: he and his wife, Elaine, have earned nearly $ 517,000 in political contributions over the past two years, $ 496,500 of which went to Republicans, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
According to federal records, the 85-year-old financier has supported some of Trump’s economic policies, such as his tariffs in China, and has made a $ 2,700 donation to the 2016 president’s campaign.
But he suggested the Capitol riots were wrong in trying to prevent Biden from taking office by interrupting the counting of congressional election votes last week.
“Going through the judicial system to try to get some results: it ran out of everything, it was already over,” Langone told CNBC.
“I think those people who tried to stop the process were discouraged,” he added.
Asked if Trump should be indicted (step ahead of the House on Wednesday), Langone replied bluntly, “I don’t care.”
“All I care about is one thing: On January 20, Joe Biden will be sworn in as president and I’m going to work my ass the way I can because I win; if he’s a very successful president, we’ll all win,” He said.
