Colombian monsignor and diplomat Mauricio Rueda Beltz was recently appointed by Pope Francis to a high position inside the Vatican, where he will perform diplomatic functions.
Specifically Rueda Beltz was appointed undersecretary of the Vatican Secretary of State. From now on the Colombian monsignor will be in charge of the ‘Section for the staff of the diplomatic service of the Holy See’.

The 50-year-old religious served as director of papal travel for four years. However, due to the pandemic and the cancellation of all the pope’s visits, he was removed from office and later assigned as counselor to the apostolic nunciature in Portugal, position he held in recent months to replace the also Colombian Monsignor Amaury Medina Blanco.
In addition, Rueda Beltz has been working in diplomatic functions at the Vatican for more than 15 years. In 2004 he was part of the Holy See’s diplomatic service, working in countries in different parts of the globe such as Equatorial Guinea, Jordan, Chile and the United States.

The priest, born in Bogota 50 years ago and ordained in 1996, specializes in canon law and will be with this appointment the Colombian with the highest rank inside the Vatican.
During the ceremony Pope Francis also took the opportunity to appoint Archbishop Jan Romeo Pawlowski as secretary of pontifical representations.
