The unique elimination format of the NCAA tournament creates many emotional scenes in virtually every game, as losing teams face the reality that the season is over.

St. Bonaventure guard Jaren Holmes spoke eloquently on the subject as she discussed her teammate and good friend Kyle Lofton, who cried at the end of a 76-61 loss to LSU.

“The quote is like men don’t cry, but I think real men cry,” Holmes said. “Real men show emotion, and that’s the true demonstration of a man who wears his heart up his sleeve.” He does it every time he enters the field and every time he is in the locker room with us.

“It’s a hard loss, but we’ll get better … and we’ll remember it for the rest of our lives, sharing that moment together. We’ll probably laugh about it in 20 years … how we cried.”

The loss came nearly three weeks after university president Dennis DePerro died of complications from COVID-19.

Michigan standout Isaiah Livers wore a T-shirt with #NotNCAAProperty written at the opening of the Wolverines NCAA Tournament against Texas Southern.

The label is part of an effort by social media to raise awareness about inequalities in college sports.

Livers, who has a foot injury, is one of the few prominent Big Ten players to lead the move. Players have been pushing for the NCAA to change rules that prohibit college athletes from making money on things like endorsements, sponsorship deals, and personal appearances.

The National College Players Association released a statement Wednesday detailing the players ’goals, which included meetings with NCAA President Mark Emmert, and the opportunity to meet with lawmakers who are working on passing laws that can set parameters for the association’s rules on the image or likeness of the name.

Colorado striker Jabari Walker had a calm mind for some wise advice from a longtime NBA player who was his father.

Samaki Walker told his son he was just going to have fun.

No doubt this would be fun: Jabari Walker won 5 for 5 from the 3-point range and finished with 24 points while the fifth Buffaloes outscored Georgetown 96-73.

“He called me and said,‘ I’m not going to fill your ear with anything. You just have to be more discriminating with the help you render toward other people. ”Walker said. “That’s what I went out and did.”

Samaki Walker played in Louisville before starting a ten-year career in the NBA that included a 2002 championship with the Los Angeles Lakers.

More advice from my father: “He told me that it was a great platform and that he didn’t come out here under any pressure. You just have to do what I’m supposed to do, play the game I do. Nothing special. Do the little things like me always and eventually everything will work out. “

Florida State advanced with a 64-54 victory over UNC Greensboro despite being only the eighth team since 2009 to not make a triple in an NCAA tournament game.

The Seminoles lost nine attempts from beyond the arc. Before Saturday, the last team that failed to make triples was Kentucky in its first win over Davidson in 2018.

Teams are 5 to 3 since 2009 in NCAA games when they don’t make a triple. Kansas has done it twice and won both games.

The last time Florida State did not leave the perimeter in any game was the 2018 loss to North Carolina State.

Florida guard Tyree Appleby “looks good, looks normal” after suffering a head laceration in the first round, but coach Mike White said it will be a decision during the match against Oral Roberts, ranked 15th, Sunday in the southern region.

Appleby took an involuntary elbow in the early second half while playing on defense against Virginia Tech and ended up bleeding all over the court. He hesitated in the locker room and returned to the bench area in overtime to see how the Gators No. 7 got the 75-70 victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The 6-foot-1 junior finished with six points and five rebounds in 22 minutes.

White said Saturday that Appleby had a “happy smile on his face” and a bandage on his forehead.

White offered less information about suspended striker Omar Payne, who was on the doorstep of the NCAA due to an “internal situation.”

Payne was sent off in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament early in the second half for a flagrant foul-2 against Tennessee’s John Fulkerson. Fulkerson suffered a concussion and a facial fracture and did not play in Tennessee’s initial loss to the state of Oregon.

White declined to say whether Payne’s suspension was related to elbowing Fulkerson.

NCAA spokesman David Worlock says in a tweet that Jabari Walker of Colorado is the 16th player in NCAA tournament history to shoot 100% from the 3-point goal in a game while making at least five attempts . Walker was 5 out of 5 from long range in a 23-point win in the first round over Georgetown.

John Goldsberry of UNC Wilmington holds the record for most 3-point attempts without losing in an NCAA tournament game. He made all eight attempts in a 75-73 loss to Maryland on March 21, 2003.

Trained by former star Patrick Ewing, Georgetown achieved March Madness with a four-win streak in four days during the Big East tournament, but it was no match for the Buffaloes.

The second full day of the NCAA tournament is underway. Georgetown began her kneeling during the national anthem.

The Hoyas closed their arms and knelt during “The Star-Spangled Banner” before their opening game against Colorado.

Trained by former star Patrick Ewing, Georgetown is seeded after winning March Madness with a four-win streak in four days through the Big East tournament.

The No. 1 brothers, Gonzaga and Michigan, will also be in action on Saturday.

Friday’s action featured three major upheavals: dragged by No. 12 from Oregon State, No. 13 from North Texas and No. 15 by Oral Roberts. Two of the annoying victims, Ohio State and Purdue, were from the Big Ten.
