Two years ago, Saturday night live added Bowen Yang as the first member of the cast of East Asian descent. The comedian has been a vital and fun part of the show ever since, but in this week’s “Weekend Update,” he showed why it really matters that he’s there.
“Across the country, rallies are being held to condemn the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes,” Colin Jost told viewers. “Here, to share resources on how you can help, is Asian cast member Bowen Yang.”
When those words appeared below him on the screen, Yang asked, “Is this my official title, a member of the Asian cast?” When Jost reminded him it was the introduction he asked for, Yang joked, “Yeah, I put it right, I feel good.”
“So things for Asians in this country have been really bleak for the last two weeks … and all the previous weeks have always been,” Yang added. “But there’s a lot of work to be done and I’ve found some online posts with action elements that everyone can help to help.” With that, he shared very specific memes like “Six ways to check your AAPI friends and tell them they’re so hot” and “Call your senators and ask them to meet Sailor Moon’s lesbian characters!”
“What can I say to help me make things so beautiful? If someone’s personality is “hitting an Asian grandmother,” it’s not a dialogue. I have an Asian grandmother, you want to puncture her. There is no point in common, mother. “
Yang’s main message to everyone watching was “do more”. If you ask Chinese restaurants, he said, “Let me know when you feed your white kids’ chicken feet.”
“I cried for a while Threatening? ” it continued. “Congratulations. I was crying in my boner for Steven Yeun. Do more. And why are you telling me you gave a good tip to your manicure? Let me know when you get on your knees and rub your feet while looking at your phone. Do more! “
Later, Yang explained, “I’m a comic. I don’t have the answers. But not only do I look for them online, but I look around. Xiao Zhen Xie’s GoFundMe, the grandmother who fought her attacker, raised $ 900,000, which she immediately returned to the community. This is where we are Asians, now come and meet us there ”.
Sharing a mandarin joy that means “feeding,” Yang said, “I don’t know what it’s useful to say to everyone, but that’s what I tell myself. Fuel. Do more. It’s the year of the ox “Metal, which basically means a car. So everyone, come in, gird yourself, because there’s no pee breaks. We’re riding at dawn, Grandmothers!”
