SUMMIT COUNTY, Colorado (KRDO) – If the scenes from the 1989 comedy “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” sound familiar in Colorado, it’s because this Chicago-set film was partially shot in upstate Colorado.
According to GoBreck and the Breckenridge Tourism Bureau, the film begins in Colorado.

When the Griwolds head for the country in search of a tree and find themselves under a forest truck, it was shot north of Silverthorne, near Maryland Creek Ranch / LG Everist.

GoBreck says the final landing of his van was at Breckenridge Golf Course, near Georgia Pass, on Tiger Rd.

The Christmas tree cutting scene was also shot in the Breckenridge / Highlands golf course area, near Tiger Rd, before the Breckenridge subdivision was built, according to GoBreck.

In a blog post, GoBreck wrote that the crew was camping in the vehicle maintenance area of Breckenridge Ski Resort at peak 8. The film was shot at night, so no interfered with skiing.

That’s where Clark, played by Chevy Chase, goes down the hill with his silicone spray plate. Crossing traffic is on a stretch of a road from Frisco to Summit Blvd, and the Toys For All trash can where it collided was in front of Frisco’s Wal-Mart.

GoBreck also said the scene where Clark and cousin Eddie, played by Randy Quaid, are shopping is at Frisco’s own Wal-Mart.

Another internal location used for the film was the former Frisco Summit High School, which is now Summit Middle School. GoBreck writes the scene where Clark saw old movies in the attic filmed in the gym. According to GoBreck, this scene was shot during a massive snowstorm when Breckenridge received more than 7 feet of snow.
It wasn’t the only time the “National Lampoon” series was filmed in Colorado. According to Pueblo Chieftain, the 1983 film “Vacances” had scenes shot in Pueblo.
