Bright meteor crosses the sky of Puerto Rico

The sighting of at least three meteors was recorded on Saturday night, culminating in a beautiful fireball at about 10:47 am

The Caribbean Astronomical Society (SAC) indicated that the bright meteor was visible from across the island in a northeasterly direction. Some observers report that he showed a striking, colorful leaving, while others even perceived a sound.

“The detail that emitted a sound is very interesting, because as we know light travels faster than sound, but on several occasions a simultaneous sound has been recorded with a meteor. It is known as an electrophonic meteor,” he said. Eddie Irizarry, SAC Vice President.

He noted that this is a slight sound and explained that sometimes some meteors emit very low radio frequencies, which cause vibrations in objects on the earth’s surface, which our ears perceive as a sound similar to a fryer or a flare, while others compare it to the sound of the “Christmas stars.”

The SAC highlighted that last Monday 11, another bright meteor was sighted from the island, and has noted that the bright meteor sighted last night, also came from the constellation of Cancer.

“This means it is linked to Delta Cancrids, which produce a few but bright meteors,” the educational entity noted.

The trajectory of the fragments caused by the Delta Cancrids is somewhat similar to that of the asteroid 2001 YB5, so it is not ruled out that it is debris released by this space rock.

The organization had advanced that this “drizzle” of meteors could cause the sighting of a few until January 24, mainly around the 17th.
