Buster Posey comes out with an injury to his left knee

NEW YORK – Giants catcher Buster Posey left the series opener Tuesday night against the Mets at Citi Field after four innings for discomfort in his left knee.

Posey, who went 1-on-3 against Mets right-back Tylor Megill, was visited by manager Gabe Kapler and coach LJ Petra in the fourth, but was left to finish the entry. That changed in the fifth, when Posey was replaced behind the set by Curt Casali.

Posey, 34, previously landed on the injured list this year with a left thumb contusion, which forced him to miss the Denver All-Star Game. The severity of the knee problem is unclear, but if Posey needs to waste time, the Giants could summon Chadwick Tromp from Triple-A Sacramento. Top potential Joey Bart is also on the 40-man roster, but has been in the IL with a quad injury since Aug. 7.
