Cam Newton’s first career with TD linked the New England Patriots with the New York Jets

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots were playing the rope on Sunday against the New York Jets, why not empty the bag of tricks?

After the end of the third quarter, on the Jets ’19-yard line, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels called for a hoax. Quarterback Cam Newton ceded Sony Michel out of the shotgun as Michel went from right to left. At the same time, receiver Jakobi Meyers was on the move, coming from left to right and ready on Michel’s side.

The Jets chased the ball aggressively, forgetting Newton, who let go of the right wing. This allowed Meyers to set foot on the 30-yard line and deliver Newton a smooth, high-arc touch pass on the 8-yard line.

Newton basically got into the end zone from there.

Meyers, of course, was a quarterback at Georgia Mountain High School in Georgia and dressed in red in that position at NC State before switching to receiver as a freshman. He passes 2-for-2 for 43 yards this season and, although he hasn’t gotten any touchdown passes, he’s pitched for two.

Meyers ’touchdown pass had an air distance of 31.3 yards, according to NFL Next Gen statistics, as it has two of the Patriots’ four longest plays in terms of airfields this season.

For Newton, it is the first touchdown of his career. Entering Sunday, he had two professional receptions for 43 yards. He had one in Tampa Bay on December 4, 2011, and added 16 yards this season.

It is also the first touchdown reception by a Patriots quarterback in team history.
