Since nursing homes require a quick test before making a visit, how does having a recent vaccine affect the results?

Getting the vaccine will not make you test positive for COVID-19 in a rapid test or PCR. If you get a positive result and it is an accurate result, you will probably be exposed before you get the vaccine or before protection starts.

If I have the vaccine and I get sick with COVID-19, can I pass it on to others?

Announcements

Yes. If you are one of the unfortunate few who are not protected by the vaccine, you will be able to pass the virus on to others.

COVID cannot be obtained against the vaccine. None of the three authorized vaccines contain any live virus.

Two weeks after receiving the first vaccine against Moderna, I noticed a slightly pink rash on my arm where I received the shot. Are you allergic to the shot? Should I get the second shot next week?

A new letter published in the New England Journal of Medicine actually describes this delayed hypersensitive skin reaction in 12 patients who received the first Modern vaccine. Most were treated with ice and antihistamines.

The twelve patients got the second shot and half had another similar delayed reaction. It is recommended that you get your second dose to be fully protected.

Do I need to get a COVID vaccine every year?

We do not know. Because vaccines are new, we don’t know how long protection can last. Most experts think we’ll probably need booster shots at some point to help boost our immunity and upgrade our protection against new variants.

Announcements

If I now have one of the vaccines against COVID, will I be able to get a different vaccine in a year?

We do not know. In theory, there may be advantages to getting a boost of the same brand as your original photograph, practically speaking, which may not be possible for everyone.

Researchers will study this issue before it becomes a problem. The CDC will likely offer some guidelines if boosters are needed.
