“Candyman” tops the box office in the United States

“Candyman” took first place at the box office in the United States and Canada.

The Universal Pictures film starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II grossed more than $ 22.3 million in a discreet weekend despite concerns related to the delta variant of the coronavirus. The horror film, co-written by Jordan Peele and directed by Nia DaCosta, is based on the urban legend that if someone repeated the word “Candyman” five times in front of the mirror, a hooked-handed killer would appear.

This is the sequel to the original 1992 “Candyman” film. The new film is expected to generate $ 5,230,000 in 51 international markets.

“It was a discreet weekend, but another plus for the horror tapes,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a Comscore media analyst.

“Candyman” surpassed “Free Guy,” which peaked at the top of the box office the previous two weekends. The action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds as a video game character, generated more than 13.5 million.

After “Free Guy,” the numbers plummet significantly.

Dergarabedian said consumers are very selective when it comes to choosing what to do away from home, especially when it comes to going to movie theaters.

In third place, “PAW Patrol” generated 6.6 million – a decrease of 50% over its first weekend. The Paramount film, based on the popular children’s television program, has accumulated more than 24 million.

“Jungle Cruise” ranked fourth with 5 million, helping the Disney action and adventure film, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, surpass the $ 100 million mark in the United States and Canada for a span of five weeks.
