SAINT ANTHONY – Saul “Canelo” Alvarez return triumphant after an inactivity of just over a year in defeating the British Callum Smith to unify the supermedian titles of the AMB and the CMB before 10 thousand fans to the Alamodome of this city.
The judges ruled the fight by unanimous decision in favor of the Mexican. It was Smith’s first setback, who entered the fight with a 27-0 record.
The meeting marked the first time that Alvarez (57-1-2) promotes his events outside Golden Boy Promotions and the advice of Oscar De La Foia. The 168-pound champion fights now associated with Marchroom Promotions.
It was also the first boxing event in the United States where it was admitted to the public since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The victory opens the door to a possible third clash against FIB middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, who returned to action the night before and won by KOT in the seventh round against Polish Kamil Szeremeta.
