Cardinal Rosa Chávez: “The world accompanied us in the peace process and will now accompany us to rescue democracy”

For the cardinal, democracy in El Salvador is in “intensive care, it is almost in the final stage.” He urges the government to rectify the decision that allows re-election.

For Cardinal Gregorio Rosa Chávez, democracy in El Salvador is in a stage of “intensive care,” comparing it as a deadly disease that would already be in the “final stage”; however, he believes there is still hope for the government to rectify and for the international community to accompany the country to rescue democracy.

“The world accompanied us for the peace process and will now accompany us in a process of rescuing democracy, true democracy,” he told various media outlets on Sunday.

In fact, since February 9, 2020, international organizations that oversee human rights and others related to the respect of jurisprudence have their eyes set on El Salvador and with greater emphasis after the first blow to the Constitution of 1 May 2021 with the dismissal of the magistrates of the Constitutional Chamber and the Attorney General.

Cardenal lamented that the latest actions taken by the government against the rule of law and violations of the Constitution have been perpetrated in a civic month, the month that El Salvador celebrates 200 years of its homeland independence.

“We are in the month of the Fatherland, the month of independence, a month of joy generally in the country, we should be joyful, joyful and excited, but today we are worried,” lamented Rosa Chávez.

According to the Cardinal there are two sentences that are being weakened at the moment, the “Rule of Law” and the due process after the reforms to the Law of the judicial career and the resolution emanated from the Constitutional Chamber imposed by the Executive in conspiracy with the official bench in the Assembly.

“We share the view that we must respect the Constitution which does not allow immediate re-election, but what happened? The rule of law was eroded and due process. If they do not take refuge, worse things can happen in the future, it should be seen with lucidity, patriotic sense and responsibility “, he recommended.

Now no one can be sure that he will get true justice to take on Rosa Chávez, in the face of the dismissal of dozens of judges ordered by the Executive and endorsed by the official bench, which commands the mandatory withdrawal of all judges over 60 or who have worked for 30 years in the Judiciary, under the pretext that with this measure they are fighting corruption.

“With what intention? Certainly justice must be independent who now feels safe in the face of an accusation, to be judged with justification, no one feels safe, because the balance is not fair, it is biased and that is not good for a country, “the cardinal said.
