Carlos García Saade: “Opposition to the Legislative Assembly must be stronger” | El Salvador News

This young lawyer, with experience as a substitute in the Legislature, sees with concern that in Congress there is no stronger opposition to the abuses of officialdom.

“Five Minutes, Without So Much Straw” is a space for short interviews and the degree that journalist Paolo Luers gave to 17 candidates for deputies from different parties. The goal is to cut out unnecessary details and offer only the spinal cord. Day by day, a different interview will be published on the networks of elsalvador.com and El Diari d’Avui until the 17 candidacies are exhausted.

Why are you now running for deputy?
What is at stake is democracy. We’ve been seeing it since February 9th and that’s what encouraged me to embark on this project.

To solve this crisis that threatens democracy, what can and should the new Legislative Assembly bring?
First I think there has to be a stronger opposition. We need to choose better second-degree officials, the subject of the prosecutor, from the magistrates who go to election in this period. I think it’s essential to come up with something new as well.

What kind of legislation would you ever support?
To begin with, the decriminalization of abortion. Here I do not agree.

Is it a priority issue?
For nothing. But it’s something I would never support. What is a priority for me is an insolvency law and an entrepreneurship law, as well as a first credit law for entrepreneurs. I think it is necessary, especially after the economic crisis we are in because of the pandemic.

We define the Bukele government with 3 adjectives.
Dictatorial, aggressive and impulsive. Basically …

Any success from this government?
He’s had some hits, not everything has been wrong. For example, I think that the issue of aid during the pandemic to families was good, the problem is that it was not handled well, it was not transparent and since then, they have never been transparent.

We have also seen here several cases of corruption.

They have been several times, but that could have been handled better. It was necessary because, like it or not, the closure was a pity, but I do think that some help was needed for the Salvadoran family.

Would you have trouble discussing and launching legislative initiatives jointly with the FMLN?
For nothing. I think that, whether it is the Front, ARENA or any other party or parliamentary group that comes up with a good idea, it needs to be supported.

Of course, we must also value the principles under which we govern ourselves.

More with the FMLN, we are far apart on the subject of principles, ideology, and so on.

But in this election, is the Front the opponent to win?
No. In this election, no. In this election, our opponent will always remain poverty, insecurity and our opponents who have a different idea of how to solve this are New Ideas, WIN. Like it or not, the parties that are married to the president.

What has ARENA done wrong to make it cost him so much?
We are people who hurt us a lot and who fortunately are no longer with us. Maybe we were a little lukewarm when it came to resolving these cases.

Will you be less lukewarm as a deputy?
Of course. I think now is the time to start being much more convinced of our principles and to be able to oppose not the leadership but some opinions that could arise from the political moments that are lived.

Tenth 3 current deputies, not necessarily from your party, who fulfilled their role.
Margarita Escobar, Rodolfo Parker and Alberto Romero.

Anything to add?
It is a new Assembly, we must look for new faces. A balance is needed between experience and renewal because this government, if given all the power, will sink us like El Salvador.
