Carlos Menem, former president of Argentina enters an induced coma in Buenos Aires – Latin America – International


Former Argentine President Carlos Menem (1989-1999), 90, is in an induced coma at a hospital in Buenos Aires in which he has been hospitalized for more than a week, after suffering a kidney failure in the middle of his delicate state of health, sources in his environment confirmed to Efe on Thursday.

The veteran Peronist politician was admitted on December 15 to the San Arcos Sanatorium in the Argentine capital for a prostate medical checkup, and already there he was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection that complicated his heart problems.

In recent days, it was reported, had seen a slight improvement, until this morning sources explained that he suffered from “kidney decompensation” and was induced into a coma.

The former head of state, who this year was interned on two other occasions -in June for a case of pneumonia that forced him to be transferred to the intensive care unit, and until the end of July for various studies- he turned 90 on July 2, while he was hospitalized.

Lawyer by profession, was president in two consecutive mandates, from 1989 to 1999, after to have been governor of La Rioja, its native province, between 1973 and 1976 – year in who was arrested after the coup that led to the last dictatorship (1976-1983) – and again from 1983 until 1987 when he began his presidential campaign.

His management as head of state was marked by the transformation in the economy, with a great commercial opening and an intense process of privatization of public companies, but also due to allegations of corruption, that he has had to face in the courts in the last years, to the time that exerts like senator, position that shows from 2005.
