WESTFIELD, Ind. – Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz, guard Quenton Nelson and center fielder Ryan Kelly will practice this week on a limited basis, coach Frank Reich said Sunday.
Wentz has been out since injuring his left foot on the second day of training on July 29th. Nelson has been out since Aug. 2 after injuring his right foot. Wentz and Nelson underwent foot surgery on August 2 and 3, respectively. Kelly has been injured in her left elbow since July 30.
The return of Wentz and Nelson to practice is the most important news because the Colts said Kelly would only be out for a couple of weeks with his elbow injury. The team spent a period of five to 12 weeks on the recoveries of Wentz and Nelson. If they both return this week, there will only be three weeks left of their respective surgeries.
The wait is not for all three players to participate in all of the exercises during this week’s workouts. The technical body will slowly facilitate their entry to avoid possible setbacks. Wentz has played a full season only twice in the first five years of his career. Nelson hasn’t missed a game since joining the NFL in 2018.
The goal is to have Wentz and Nelson ready for Colts ’Week 1 game against Seattle on September 12th. Reich said last week that he wants Wentz to have at least a couple of weeks of training before playing in a regular season game. .
“In the perfect world, we have a good idea after this third preseason game and Carson would get to work two weeks before the first game,” Reich said last week. “This is the perfect world. The next perfect world is that he only gets the job of the game week. I don’t know if that will happen. It could be week 2, week 3. That is yet to be determined. well, but we haven’t pushed it yet. We’ll have to wait until we get to the point where we push it and see how things respond and we don’t want to do it too soon. too fast. “
Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger have been splitting catches for the Colts’ first team quarterback over the past two weeks. Neither player has taken control of the competition to start if Wentz is not ready for the season opener. Reich said he has not decided who will start the preseason finale in Detroit on Friday.
Eason is 31 of 48 for 315 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the preseason. Ehlinger is 18 of 28 for 225 yards without touchdowns and three interceptions.
