Cases of childhood COVID increase sharply after the summer decline

(CNN) – The number of children who test positive for COVID has increased by 500% in the last month.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 200,000 children received a positive result during the week ending August 26th. Children accounted for 22.4% of the weekly cases reported.

That number was about 38,000 during the week ending July 22nd.

The increase comes at a time when children in much of the country are returning to school.

It brings the rate of childhood infections to the same level as the winter rise, after cases had declined in early summer.

Child mortality rates are still extremely low.

The highest rate of children dying from COVID by any state was 0.24% percent of infected children. In some states, it was zero.

Nearly 4.8 million cases of childhood COVID have been reported since the onset of the pandemic, accounting for approximately 15% of all cases.

The age range denoted by a child varies from state to state, but with most a person’s classification as a child ending at 17 or 19 years of age.
