Preliminary financial data from developer Cyberpunk 2077 shows 2020 sales and profits several times higher than the records set during the release year of The Witcher 3
CD Projekt today announced two preliminary issues of its upcoming annual profit report to give you an idea of how big your Cyberpunk 2077 debut really was in 2020 and December.
Throughout the year, CD Projekt achieved a record PLN 2.14 million ($ 562 million) in consolidated sales revenue. This number is more than four times what was reported in 2019 and more than two and a half times the previous record of PLN 798 million ($ 210 million) of the company, set in 2015 with the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The company also set a record for results, with a net profit of PLN 1.15 million ($ 303 million). This more than triples the company’s previous profit record of PLN 342 million ($ 89.8 million), also set in 2015.
The difference between the company’s two best years looks even bigger considering that The Witcher 3 was released in May 2015 and had months to continue selling, while Cyberpunk 2077 hit the shelves on December 10th. (Cyberpunk 2077 had also reached 8 million orders in the years prior to its launch.)
Aside from sales, it would be hard to call the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 an unqualified success. The game debuted in such a harsh state, especially on consoles, that the developer promised refunds to any customer who wanted it and Sony completely withdrew the digital copy of the game from the PlayStation Store. As of this writing, Sony has not resold it.
CD Projekt expects to announce its final results last year on April 22nd.
