Chamber does not recommend to Senate to confirm Secretary of Education

The House of Representatives presented on Tuesday, a report on the interpellations to the appointed secretaries of Health and Education, Carlos Mellado López and Elba Aponte Sants, respectively in which it was recommended to hang the appointment of the head of Education.

“Finally, we recommend to Dr. Mellado López, that together with the Chamber and the Senate, as well as the other units of the Legislative Assembly, we collaborate in improving the protocols before the COVID-19 to benefit the health of all”, said only representative Higgins who chairs the Chamber Health Commission, at a press conference.

For her part, the chair of the Education Commission, Deborah Soto, recommended to the Senate that Aponte Santos not be confirmed as Secretary of Education.

We recommend:

“The report is important to know that, in addition, it concludes that the appointed secretary Elba Aponte Santos was evasive in answering questions from the representatives. She did not present a specific plan for the reopening of schools, no has a protocol for handling COVID-19 on school grounds and did not explain to this House of Representatives or country how it will ensure a healthy environment for our youth and children, ”Soto said.

“For all the above and for its questionable performance in handling other matters in the Department of Education, we conclude in this report, that the designated Elba Aponte Santos is not prepared to perform her duties as Secretary of the Department of Education,” he added.

“It means he doesn’t meet the qualities needed to lead the Department of Education at times like these,” he ruled.

He explained that the House’s recommendation is to postpone the reopening of schools until August 2021 and prepare a “true plan” for reopening schools and issue COVID-19 protocols.
