HBO Max is honoring a request from Dave Chappelle to remove “Chappelle’s Show” from the broadcast service later this year.
Casey Bloys, head of content for HBO and HBO Max, made the revelation during the main conversation on the first day of Varieties Virtual FYCFest.
“We had a conversation with Dave. I won’t go into it, but it’s very clear that he has a very unique, specific and emotional problem, ”Bloys said. Varietyexecutive TV editor, Daniel Holloway. “So at the end of the year, at the end of this year, on December 31, we will respect your request and withdraw the program.”
Chappelle previously got Netflix to take the show that also bears his name. In a long video of one of her featured sets posted to Instagram, Chappelle explained that due to the nature of the deal she signed years ago when the show was made, she receives no compensation when ViacomCBS licenses it to streamers like HBO Max or Netflix.
“They (ViacomCBS) didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract,” Chappelle said in the video. “But is it true? I found out that these people were streaming my work and that they should never ask me or tell me. Perfectly legal because I signed the contract. But, right? I didn’t think so either. “
In the same video, Chappelle told the story of how HBO turned down their release for the show when it presented them to Comedy Central.
“They said, literally,‘ what do we need you for? That’s what they told me when I was kicked out of the office, “What do we need you for?” He said. “And here we are all these years later and they are broadcasting the same program that presented them. So I ask them, why do you need me? ”
