Chicago shooting: second suspect charged in death of retired firefighter Lieutenant Dwain Williams during Morgan Park attempted kidnapping

CHICAGO (WLS) – A second suspect has been charged with the deadly shooting of retired Chicago firefighter lieutenant Dwain Williams outside a popcorn store in Morgan Park earlier this month.

Gary’s 18-year-old Dwain Johnson has been charged with first-degree murder as well as vehicle hijacking and gun charges, police said Friday morning. He is scheduled to appear in bail on Friday.

On Thursday, Chicago police announced that a 15-year-old boy has been charged with the shooting.

Williams, a beloved retired CFD Lieutenant, was leaving a popcorn store in Morgan Park at 117th Street and Western Avenue on Dec. 3. The surveillance video captured the exchange of gunfire, with Williams and the group trying to approach him. Williams was beaten and later died.

Mayor Lightfoot and Chicago police are discussing allegations of the firefighter’s death

During a news conference Thursday afternoon, Chicago police said they were looking for two additional suspects in the shooting.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot spoke Thursday morning with Williams’ wife about breaking up the case.

“As you can imagine, his life is still shattered. There are many tears and I suspect there will be many more spills in the coming days,” Lightfoot said. “This is something that has irreparably changed their lives.”

CPD said car robberies are increasing dramatically this year in the city. The superintendent added that his agents have taken some of the people responsible for these crimes off the street.

“We’ve had an extraordinary climb, but we’ve made some arrests,” Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said. “We have to make many more arrests. We are not satisfied and we will not stop chasing these suspects until they are all caught.”
