Chicago’s famous double-decker cars and buses will stop operating in the new year, the company announced Monday.
A message on the Chicago Trolley website says that Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co. “will stop working” after December 31st.
“It is with great sadness that Coach USA Chicago today announced the plan to stop operating our Chicago Trolley and Indiana Airport Supersaver companies,” Sean Hughes, corporate affairs director at Coach USA North America, said in a statement. .
“Megabus.com operations will continue to use the Chicago location as they do today,” Hughes said. “In addition, Megabus.com will serve the University of Notre Dame from O’Hare and Midway Airports on weekends and major school breaks.”
The decision surprised tourists.
“I remember when I was a kid, I used to walk down Michigan Avenue,” tourist Joe Carlini said. “It’s sad to see him go missing.”
Tour guide and pilot Bernard Turner will share some of this sadness.
“I have mixed feelings,” Turner said. “Probably, like most employees, it seems sad that something that has been such an integral part of Chicago just falls by the wayside. And you think someone would grab the ball and run, and that’s what I hope for.”
Anyone with tickets for visits after this date can request a refund by calling (773) 648-5000 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
The company gave no reason for the closure in its message.
