Leaders of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) congratulated this Saturday on the “extraordinary” success in the face of the covid-19 pandemic, when a World Health Organization (WHO) mission is about to arrive in the country. will try to clarify the origins of the coronavirus.
The Chinese government has been heavily criticized inside and outside its borders for the way it handled the virus outbreak in Wuhan, in the center of the country, in late 2019.
But this Saturday, the CCP leadership welcomed the party’s “decisive role” in the face of this year’s “strange risks and challenges” and for having adopted “a long-term perspective that allowed for a glorious victory and extremely extraordinary in this totally unusual year, “according to statements released by the Xinhua news agency.
China claims that in just a few months it has managed to eradicate the coronavirus thanks to a severe policy of confinement in the affected cities. In addition, it will be the only country in the world to record positive growth this year.
But China is accused of hiding the appearance of viruses, which allowed it to spread around the world. At least eight people who have criticized government policies at the start of the crisis were somehow punished in the country.
For example, a Chinese journalist, Zhang Zhan, reports in Wuhan earlier this year showed the chaos of the first few weeks, was arrested and will be tried from Monday.
These statements of Chinese complacency come days before the arrival of a WHO mission in the country, which will travel among others to Wuhan, to investigate the origins of viruses, specifically to try to understand how it happened from animal to man.
This investigation is not intended to “blame a country or authorities” but to try to “understand what happened to prevent it from happening again.”
China recently tried to sow some doubts about the origin of this virus. “All available evidence shows that the coronavirus did not appear in Wuhan, in central China,” the People’s Daily recently posted on its website without giving further details.
For months, China has also promised to share its vaccine with developing countries and supplies masks and other protective materials to countries in need.
