China says it has not registered any new cases of local COVID-19 transmission since July for the first time since July, amid efforts to test millions of residents and isolate those infected.
The development comes after more than 1,200 Nanjing residents were recently infected in an outbreak caused by the Delta variant, which was introduced from abroad and detected in late July.
The country has not recorded any deaths as part of the outbreak, which caused blockades in parts of the city, as well as in Beijing, Wuhan and Jingmen, in central Hubei Province.
Local officials in regions of China experiencing outbreaks have been implementing massive tests to identify and isolate carriers. Regions include Wuhan, the original epicenter of the pandemic, which has tested its 12 million residents.

“Although the current China [COVID containment] the policy is characterized by a high degree of disruption and cost, a set of effective measures has been established that I don’t think will be easily abandoned, ”said Chen Zhengming, a professor of epidemiology at Oxford University in England. Reuters.
“Customs inspections, quarantine, community mobilization, mass testing, etc., one round, two rounds and then three rounds: China has become accustomed to them,” the expert said on the measures.
