Not all games you see a player go into celebration mode after a throw won him 20 feet, but Oscar Mercado had reason to get excited.
The Cleveland Indians defeated the Boston Red Sox, 7-5, Sunday in a wild game that caused Cleveland to recover from a four-run deficit. But it was this pull forward that made the world of baseball talk.
With the score tied and two outs in the eighth (and Mercado in the first), Yu Chang pulled a double down the third base line. Mercado was thinking at home at the time the ball took the field, but if you weren’t paying attention to what unfolded on the base road, you’d think the Red Sox took Mercado home for half a mile.

Repetitions would show that Red Sox second baseman Yairo Munoz obstructed Mercado on the base path. And besides, Austin Davis almost got in the way of Mercado at third base: the two narrowly avoided a collision.
Here is an overview of the obstruction. In addition, a boost to the middle of Mercado.

The Red Sox broadcast was ready to go into a merger over the call, but once they saw Munoz on the way, they even admitted the sentence was correct.

“Ah, there it was.”
We’re so conditioned to see referees miss these kind of calls, but I have to say that the referee on the motherboard, Nic Lentz, was everywhere. Good job.
