Experts speculate that a possible return to the normal world prior to the coronavirus of concerts, sporting events, movies and flying abroad may require a person to have a vaccine passport, CNN reported Sunday.
In order to prepare for this scenario and allow individuals a practical authorization to do these activities, several companies are developing smartphone applications so that people can conveniently post details of their coronavirus tests and vaccines.
One such example is Common Trust Network, an app developed by nonprofit groups with the goal of creating a reliable model to validate people’s health status while traveling. The Common Trust Network has already partnered with several airlines and hundreds of health systems in the United States
The group has created a CommonPass app that allows users to upload relevant medical information, such as a vaccination test, that can generate a health certificate or pass in the form of a QR code that can then be shown to authorities without revealing sensitive information.
That means “you can get tested every time you cross a border,” Thomas Crampton, head of marketing and communications for The Commons Project, told CNN, “You can’t get vaccinated every time you cross a border.”
Large technology companies are also working on similar projects. For example, IBM developed its own application, the Digital Health Pass, which allows companies and sites to customize indicators that would be mandatory for entry, such as coronavirus testing, temperature checks, and vaccination records.
Credentials related to these indicators could be stored in a mobile wallet for convenience.
