Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner announced on New Year’s Day the opening of the city’s first coronavirus vaccination clinic.

“The virus has gained weight, especially among the elderly and black and brown communities,” Turner said. “The vaccine is the best option to prevent people from getting sick and suffering serious consequences.”

After the Pfizer vaccine was authorized in mid-December, front-line health workers began receiving doses through phase 1A of the Texas state distribution plan. The Moderna vaccine was authorized shortly after and phase 1B vaccinations began in the state for people 65 years of age or older and people 16 years and older who had at least one chronic disease, such as cancer, kidney disease. chronic, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, solid organ transplantation, obesity, pregnancy, sickle cell disease, and type 2 diabetes.

According to the Houston Department of Health, vaccines at the city’s first public clinic will be available free of charge starting Saturday for those at “high risk for serious illness and death from coronavirus disease.”

First, people who meet the criteria for phase 1A or 1B are advised to contact their doctor, hospital or pharmacy to get the vaccine. You can use the online map of the Texas Department of Health to find a provider as well.

If you can’t get it through your doctor’s office, you can sign up to receive the Modern vaccine by appointment at the health department at Saturday’s mass clinic.

To schedule an appointment, call the Houston Department of Health at 832-393-4220 between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., starting Saturday, January 2nd. You will be provided with the location and time of appointment for each person who registers. vaccinated.
