The Oregon Health Authority on Tuesday announced 2,040 new cases and 44 deaths from COVID-19, making September the fifth deadliest month of the pandemic.
At least 204 Oregonians with COVID-19 have died during the first 14 days of September, surpassing the all-February total, which is now the sixth deadliest month.
August was similarly bleak, recording the third pandemic death at nearly 400. Officials have warned that September will be macabre, with declining cases and hospitalizations, but that record highs will remain at record highs.

Who died: The state did not immediately release information about the death.
Hospitalizations: 1,082 people with confirmed cases of COVID-19 are hospitalized, up to seven more than Monday. This includes 288 people in intensive care, 14 more than on Monday.
Vaccines: Oregon reported 8,392 newly administered doses, including 4,301 administered on Monday and the rest of the previous days.
Since it started: Oregon has reported 303,532 confirmed or suspected infections and 3,490 deaths, among the lowest per capita figures in the country. To date, the state has reported 4,970,897 doses of administered vaccines, fully vaccinating 2,443,376 people and partially vaccinating 241,885 people.
