COVID-19 Drive-Thru vaccination clinic opens in San Mateo County (NBC Bay Area)

As of Monday, San Mateo County is offering a COVID-19 vaccination clinic for eligible health workers and vulnerable residents.

The clinic, which uses the Modern Vaccine, begins at 1 p.m. at the San Mateo County Event Center at 1346 Saratoga Drive in San Mateo.

Vaccines will be available to eligible workers and residents under Phase 1A of the state vaccine distribution guidelines. This phase includes the following groups: those at risk of COVID-19 through work in health care or long-term care (including non-clinical staff), and residents of nursing centers, living establishments assisted and long-term care settings for the elderly or vulnerable.

San Mateo County Board of Supervisors Chairman David Canepa announced the mass vaccination clinic on Monday.

“This is the best news I’ve heard in a long time and it shows that the dark days of winter will end soon,” Canepa said.

People interested in getting vaccinated at the drive-thru site should fill out an online form to confirm their eligibility. Registration and appointment information will be available once eligibility is confirmed.

The clinic will be open from 1pm to 5pm on Monday and from 9am to 5pm from Tuesday to Saturday.

There are approximately 38,000 health workers and 12,000 long-term care residents in the county. Bill Silverfarb, Canepa’s policy advisor, said approximately 12,000 people have been vaccinated since the county’s allocation of 22,000 vaccines so far. This does not include medical system workers such as Kaiser Permanent or Sutter Health, who have separate vaccine assignments.

Silverfarb said the clinic is expected to continue as long as doses of vaccine are available. The second dose of vaccination will be available in four weeks through a similar clinic.

Phase 1A people who have health plans through Kaiser Permanente can get the vaccine through their Kaiser primary care provider.
