Covid-19 pandemic postpones historic rescue on Titanic

The company that owns the rights to rescue objects from the Titanic has indefinitely postponed its plans to recover and display transatlantic radio equipment due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a document filed Friday at the court hearing.

RMS Titanic Inc. mention the “growing difficulty linked to international travel and logistics, and the health risks it poses to the expedition team.”

The Atlanta-based company also noted that it has been almost a year without its main source of revenue due to the closure of exhibitions of its vast collection of Titanic artifacts due to restrictions on coronavirus. They have only opened a few exhibitions scattered across the country, but they record limited attendance.

Still, the company says it has financial strength. He noted that the expedition to recover the radio equipment remains a priority and “will be carried out as soon as it is reasonably viable.”

The firm believes that showcasing the radio will help sustain the transatlantic legacy, as well as honor passengers and crew. The radio, known in 1912 as the Marconi wireless telegraph machine, transmitted distress calls to nearby ships that helped rescue 700 people who were on lifeboats.

RMS Titanic Inc. to present his paper to a federal court in Norfolk, Virginia, which presides over Titanic-related rescue matters. The company has indicated that it will continue to work on a plan to fund the expedition, as required by the maritime court.

However, even without the pandemic, the realization of the expedition is far from guaranteed. The signing delivers a lawsuit with the US government over the legality of the company.

The mystery behind the Titanic

Federal government lawyers allege that the mission is banned under federal law and an international agreement with Britain. Lawyers say the company must seek government permission to withdraw the radio because the sunken transatlantic liner is recognized as a memorial to the approximately 1,500 people who died.

The luxurious transatlantic liner traveling from England to New York in 1912 crashed into an iceberg and went into orris. His remains were discovered in 1985 about 3.8 kilometers (2.4 miles) deep in the North Atlantic.

RMS Titanic Inc. is the recognized court custodian of the ship’s artifacts. The company’s collection includes silver crockery, porcelain pieces and gold coins, as well as whistles and a piece of the Titanic’s hull.
