Here’s today’s COVID-19 update from the County Human Services and Health Agency with data through April 20th.
Vaccination progress:
- More than 2.58 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the region and more than 2.35 million have been administered. This number includes both county residents and those working in San Diego County.
- Overall, about 1.32 million county residents have received at least one shot of the two-dose vaccine. It is 49% of those eligible.
- Of those vaccinated to date, about 847,000 county residents, or 31.5% of San Diegans age 16 and older, are fully immunized.
- The goal is to vaccinate completely 75% of residents aged 16 or over in San Diego County or 2,017,011 people. To date, 65.3% of the target population has received at least one vaccine and 42% are fully vaccinated.
- Those who received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which is currently on hold in the county, due to the orientation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration, they are added to the total of San Diego fully vaccinated.
- The difference between the doses sent and the number of vaccines administered represents approximately what is expected to be used in the next seven days and the doses still to be entered into the registration system.

Status metrics:
- The adjusted case rate calculated by the state of San Diego County is currently 6.1 cases per 100,000 residents (as of April 20).
- The county remains at the Orange or Tier 3 level under the new state orientation. The California Department of Public Health states that unless there are mitigating circumstances, such as a low vaccine absorption rate, a county will only move to a more restrictive level if hospitalizations increase significantly among vulnerable people, especially among vulnerable people. vaccinated people, and both tests of positivity. and adjusted case rates show a significant increase in transmission. This is not currently the case in the region.
- Currently, the positive test percentage is 2.4%, placing the county at level 3 or Orange level.
- The county’s health equity metric, which analyzes test positivity for areas with the lowest health conditions, is 3.0% and is also at the Orange or Tier 3 level.

Community configuration outbreaks:
- Eight new community outbreaks were confirmed on April 20: two in restaurant / bar establishments, two in grocery / store establishments, one in a nursery / preschool / daycare center, one in a government setting, one in a business environment and one in a TK-12 school environment.
- In the last seven days (April 14 to April 20), 21 outbreaks of the community were confirmed.
- The number of community outbreaks stays above the trigger for seven or more days.
- An outbreak of community environment is defined as three or more cases of COVID-19 in one environment and in people from different households during the last 14 days.
Tests:
- On April 20, 16,947 tests were reported in the county and the percentage of new positive cases was 2%.
- The average percentage of 14-day positive cases is 1.7%. The target is less than 8.0%.
- The average daily test for 7 days is 12,872.
Cases, hospitalizations and ICU admissions:
- On April 20, 263 cases of COVID-19 were reported in the county. The total for the region is 275,631.
- 15,186 or 5.5% of all cases required hospitalization.
- 1,676 or 0.6% of all cases and 11% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.
Deaths:
- Seven new deaths were reported for COVID-19 on April 20th. The total for the region is 3,681.
- Four women and three men died between April 4 and 19.
- Of the people who died, two were 80 or older, one was 70, two were 60, one was 50 and one was 40.
- They all had underlying medical conditions.
