COVID-19 San Diego County Update – 23-3-2021 | News

Here’s today’s COVID-19 update from the County Human Services and Health Agency with data through March 22nd.

Vaccination progress:

  • More than 1.59 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the region and more than 1.44 million have been registered as administered. This number includes both county residents and those working in San Diego County.
  • Of those vaccinated to date, more than 504,000 county residents, or 18.8% of San Diego residents age 16 and older, are fully immunized.
  • Overall, more than 823,000 county residents have received at least one shot of the two-dose vaccine. It is 30.6% of those eligible.
  • Those who receive the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine are added to the total of fully vaccinated San Diegoans.
  • The difference between the doses administered and those used in a vaccination represents approximately what is expected to be administered in the next seven days and the doses that are yet to be entered into the registration system.

Status metrics:

  • The adjusted case rate calculated by the state of San Diego County is currently 5.5 cases per 100,000 residents. The county is on the red level.
  • Currently, the test positive percentage is 2.4%, placing the county at level 3 or Orange level.
  • The county’s health equity metric, which analyzes test positivity for areas with the lowest health conditions, is 3.4% and is also at the Orange or Tier 3 level.
  • Although two of the three metrics rate the county for the Orange or Tier 3 level, the state assigns the counties to the most restrictive level.
  • The California Department of Public Health evaluates counties on a weekly basis. The next report is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30th.

Community configuration outbreaks:

  • No new outbreaks from the community were confirmed on March 22nd.
  • In the last seven days (March 16-22), 16 outbreaks of the community were confirmed.
  • The number of community outbreaks remains above the trigger for seven or more days.
  • An outbreak of community environment is defined as three or more cases of COVID-19 in one environment and in people from different households during the last 14 days.

Tests:

  • On March 22, 11,456 tests were reported in the county and the percentage of new positive cases was 2%.
  • The average percentage of positive cases of 14 days is 2.7%. The target is less than 8.0%.
  • The average daily test for 7 days is 11,482.

Cases, hospitalizations and ICU admissions:

  • On March 22, 243 cases of COVID-19 were reported in the county. The total for the region is 268,160.
  • 13,969 or 5.2% of all cases required hospitalization.
  • 1,628 or 0.6% of all cases and 11.7% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.

Deaths:

  • Four new deaths were reported for COVID-19 on March 22nd. The total for the region is 3,498.
  • A woman and three men died between March 19 and 21.
  • One person who died was about 80 years old, one was 70 years old, one was 60 years old and one was 50 years old.
  • They all had underlying medical conditions.
