Here’s today’s COVID-19 update from the County Human Services and Health Agency with data through March 24th.
Vaccination progress:
- Nearly 1.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the region and more than 1.5 million have been registered as administered. This number includes both county residents and those working in San Diego County.
- Of those vaccinated to date, more than 519,000 county residents, or 19.3% of San Diegans age 16 and older, are fully immunized.
- Overall, more than 853,000 county residents have received at least one shot of the two-dose vaccines. It is 31.7% of those eligible.
- Those who receive the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine are added to the total of fully vaccinated San Diego.
- The difference between the doses administered and those used in a vaccination represents approximately what is expected to be administered in the next seven days and the doses still to be entered into the registration system.

Status metrics:
- The adjusted case rate calculated by the state of San Diego County is currently 5.5 cases per 100,000 residents. The county is on the red level.
- Currently, the test positive percentage is 2.4%, placing the county at level 3 or Orange level.
- The county’s health equity metric, which analyzes test positivity for areas with the lowest health conditions, is 3.4% and is also at the Orange or Tier 3 level.
- Although two of the three metrics rate the county for the Orange or Tier 3 level, the state assigns the counties to the most restrictive level.
- The California Department of Public Health evaluates counties on a weekly basis. The next report is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30th.
Community configuration outbreaks:
- Four new community outbreaks were confirmed on March 24th. Two in business environments, one in a hotel / resort / spa and one in a commercial setting.
- In the last seven days (March 16-24), 18 outbreaks of the community were confirmed.
- The number of community outbreaks stays above the trigger for seven or more days.
- An outbreak of community environment is defined as three or more cases of COVID-19 in one environment and in people from different households during the last 14 days.
Tests:
- On March 24, 17,596 tests were reported in the county and the percentage of new positive cases was 1%.
- The average percentage of 14-day positive cases is 2.5%. The target is less than 8.0%.
- The average daily test for 7 days is 11,441.
Cases, hospitalizations and ICU admissions:
- On March 24, 210 cases of COVID-19 were reported in the county. The total for the region is 268,627.
- 14,023 or 5.2% of all cases required hospitalization.
- 1,630 or 0.6% of all cases and 11.6% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.
Deaths:
- On March 24, 11 new deaths were reported for COVID-19. The total of the region is 3,520.
- Two women and nine men died between January 19 and March 23.
- Of the people who died, four were 80 or older, three were 70, one was 60, two were 50 and one was 40.
- Ten had underlying medical conditions and one has a pending medical history.
